Abstract
The objective of the study are to describe the type of imperative sentences that appeared in the film Black Adam (2022) and to describe the function of imperative sentences that appeared in the film Black Adam (2022). Therefore, the
researcher was interested in analyzing the imperative sentences delivered in the film Black Adam (2022) because the researcher wanted to see the types and functions of imperative sentences used by all the characters in the movie. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative research method. The source of the data is taken from the film Black Adam (2022), which lasts 2 hours and 5 minutes.
Another source that the researcher used is the transcript. The researcher used theory triangulation to validate the data. The researcher using theory by Quirk et al. (1985), Celce-Murcia & Larsen-Freeman (1999), and Greenbaum & Nelson
(2002) in the theory of types of imperative sentences and using theory by Quirk et al. (1985), Celce-Murcia & Larsen-Freeman (1999), and Huddleston et al. (2022) in the theory of the function of imperative sentences. Based on the data, the researcher found 122 data items that matched and were indicated as imperative sentences. From the type of imperative, six imperative types indicated were Non-Subject, Second-person Subject, Third-person Subject, Let's Imperative, Negative Do Imperative, and Be Imperative, with the latter being more dominant in non-subject imperatives. From the function of imperative, 12 imperative functions
indicated were order, prohibition, request, advice, warning, suggestion, instruction, invitation, permission, wish, threat, and condition, with order as the most dominant function in the film.
