Abstract

The primary objective of this research is to identify the types of directive speech acts used in the film "Purple Heart" and to describe the functions of these directive speech acts within the film. This film narrates a story about a contract marriage and the various challenges faced by the main character, Luke. The method employed is descriptive qualitative research. The data source consists of the film "Purple Heart." The data analyzed includes all directive speech acts used by the main character in the film. Data collection techniques involve documentation, followed by data presentation using coding techniques. Data analysis employs content analysis techniques linked to the pragmatic context in the analysis of directive speech acts. The research findings indicate that there are 40 instances of various types of directive speech acts used by the main character in "Purple Heart." These types include: urging (1 instance), giving advice (7 instances), commanding (21 instances), and requesting (11 instances). The most dominant type of directive speech act is commanding because in this film many command between the actors. All these speech acts demonstrate functions as directive speech acts, including requests (12 instances), obligations (13 instances), and advice (15 instances). The function of advising predominates among the directive speech acts in this film because in this film there are many conflicts and the actors advise each other.
