Abstract
This aims of this research are (1) to describe the types of maxims flouting in Before Sunrise movie and (2) to describe the function of maxim flouting in Before Sunrise movie. This research used the pragmatic approach. Meanwhile, the researcher used the descriptive-qualitative for the research method. The data were collected by used the documentation and content analysis. The data analysis was used the Miles and Huberman theory. The data analysis was hold by collecting the data, selected the accurate data, categorized the data into the types and the function of maxim flouting, then describing and drawing conclusion. The result of the research, (1) the types of maxim flouting was all flouted by the character of the movie. In terms of emersion, the maxim of quantity is the most frequently found in the movie. There were 10 data found show the flouting of maxim of quantity. (2) all types of maxim flouting had different function. The function found in the movie are convincing, boring, annoying, causing, insulting, alarming, enlightening, getting the hearer to do something and getting the hearer to realize something. Meanwhile, the getting the hearer to realized something are the most often appearing function. There were 13 data found that show the getting the hearer to realize something function.
